Be more creative in web3 by stealing like an artist

Jun 17, 2023

I recently finished reading the book Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon and want to share some of my thoughts.

It's a great book for anyone who wants to be more creative, and it has a lot of great insights that can be applied to web3.

One of the key takeaways from the book is that nothing is truly original.

Everything is built on the shoulders of giants. So, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, it's better to steal from the best and iterate on their ideas.

This is especially true in web3. The space is moving so quickly that it's impossible to be the first to do everything. But that doesn't mean you can't be successful. By stealing from the best and iterating on their ideas, you can create something that's even better than what came before.

Here are a few examples of how you can steal like an artist in web3:

Look at what your competitors are doing.

Don't be afraid to steal their best ideas. But don't just copy them. Iterate on them and make them your own.

Look at what's happening in other industries.

Web3 is still in its early stages, so there's a lot of inspiration to be found in other industries. Look at what's working in the gaming industry, the finance industry, and the social media industry.

Don't be afraid to steal from art, music, and literature.

The best web3 products are often inspired by art, music, and literature (look at NFTs!). So don't be afraid to steal from these sources of inspiration.

One of the best ways to iterate on your ideas is to get feedback from others. So don't be afraid to share your work with others and get their input.

Don't be afraid to fail.

Failure is a natural part of the creative process. So don't be afraid to fail. Just learn from your mistakes and keep moving forward.

Have fun!

Creating is supposed to be fun. So don't take yourself too seriously. Just relax, have fun, and let your creativity flow.

Steal Like an Artist is a super short read, you can finish it within one sitting and it can really help with being more creative.

One of the reasons why AI is so cool it’s because it’s doing exactly that: reiterating the ‘stolen’ content and making it its own. I'm pretty sure you can do exactly the same.
